Overview
The Essentials of Islam course is designed for students who are already familiar with the basic teachings of Islam and wish to deepen their understanding of its core principles. This course provides a structured and systematic exploration of the foundational knowledge required of every Muslim, helping students build clarity, confidence, and sound understanding in their religious practice.
Rooted in the well-known Ḥadīth of Jibrīl, the course covers the essential dimensions of the religion: belief, worship, and spiritual refinement.
Course Content
Students will study the three core areas outlined in the Ḥadīth of Jibrīl:
- Īmān (Belief / ʿAqīdah)
A study of the foundations of Islamic belief, focusing on developing correct understanding and conviction. - Islām (Jurisprudence / Fiqh)
An introduction to essential rulings of worship and daily practice, with a focus on Ḥanafī fiqh while also incorporating broader halal and haram principles. - Iḥsān (Purification of the Self / Tarbiyah)
Cultivating sincerity, character, and spiritual discipline through practical guidance and self-development.
The course aims to inform and educate students on the essential knowledge required of every Muslim, while fostering personal growth and awareness.
Texts & Curriculum
The course draws from well-established classical and contemporary texts, including:
- Tarbiyah: The Book of Assistance Made Easy
- Ḥanafī Fiqh: Ḥanafī Fiqh Made Easy and Halal & Haram Essentials
- Shāfiʿī Fiqh: Ark of Salvation (Safīnat al-Najāt)
- ʿAqīdah: Foundations of Belief (Imām al-Ghazālī)
Texts are taught and explained by qualified instructors with an emphasis on clarity and practical application.

Shaykh Khazen Zaoud
Teacher
Khazen Zaoud began his journey of sacred knowledge by memorising the Qur’an in Australia under the guidance of Shaykh Abdul Moez & Shaykh Abdul Kareem Newman. In 2005, he travelled to Yemen where he studied for a year at a branch of Dar al-Mustafa. He then moved to Damascus, Syria, and pursued formal studies at Ma’had al-Fath al-Islami, graduating in 2011 with a focus on Arabic and the Sharia sciences, and receiving an ijazah in Qur’an.
Returning to Australia in 2012, he served as the Imam of Lakemba Musalla for several years and taught at Rissalah College in Lakemba. He now continues to teach and serve the community at Daar Ibn Abbas.
